An app your customers install from a WhatsApp link
Installable web apps with offline support and push notifications, built once for Android, iPhone and desktop, with a straight answer on when a native app would serve you better.
A progressive web app is a website that can be installed on a phone's home screen, open full-screen, keep working on a poor connection and send notifications. We build PWAs for businesses whose users will not download another app from a store but will tap a link, and we say plainly when a native app is the better choice.
- Starting from
- ₹75,000
- Typical range
- ₹75,000 – ₹2,50,000
- Timeline
- 6–10 weeks
What we build
- 01
Install from a link
Users add the app to their home screen straight from the browser, with no store download.
- 02
Offline order capture
Orders, forms and notes saved on the device and sent automatically when the connection returns.
- 03
Push notifications
Price changes, order status and reminders on Android phones, and on iPhones once the app is installed.
- 04
Light on storage
A small fraction of the space a typical native app takes, which matters on budget phones.
- 05
One codebase everywhere
The same app runs on Android, iPhone, tablets and office computers.
- 06
Instant updates
Changes go live on the server, so nobody waits for a store review or an update download.
- 07
Optional Play Store listing
The PWA can be wrapped as a Trusted Web Activity and published on Google Play when you want a listing.
Who this is for
A turmeric and spice wholesaler in Erode supplies a few hundred kirana shops through four sales representatives. Retailers reorder by phoning the office or messaging a rep, and price changes reach them late, if at all. A native app sounds like the answer until you ask the shopkeepers: their phones are full, they have never installed a supplier's app and they do not intend to start. They will, however, tap a link in a WhatsApp message. A progressive web app lives behind that link. It opens like a website, offers to sit on the home screen like an app, and lets the shop reorder in a few taps. For the distributor, this reorder app can be one piece of wider software for wholesale distributors covering stock, billing and collections.
What a PWA includes
- Installability: a home-screen icon, full-screen display without the browser bar and a proper launch screen, on Android and iPhone alike.
- Offline behaviour: the product list and the shop's previous orders are stored on the phone, so a retailer in a weak-signal market can build an order offline and it is sent when the network returns. Offline-first design treats the connection as a bonus rather than a requirement.
- Push notifications: price changes, new stock and order status. On Android these behave much like an app's notifications; on iPhones they work once the user has added the app to the home screen.
- A back office: products, price lists per customer group, orders and sales representatives, managed from any browser.
- A light footprint: the app takes a small fraction of the storage a typical native app needs, which matters on a budget phone that is always full.
When a PWA beats a Play Store app
Choose a PWA when users arrive through links rather than store searches, when they use the app occasionally, when you need it on iPhones and office computers as well as Android, and when you want to change things weekly without waiting for store reviews or user updates. One codebase also means lower build and maintenance cost than separate Android and iPhone apps. Our article on whether a website or an app should come first offers a simple test based on how often customers transact, and PWA versus native Android app sets the two side by side.
When it does not
A PWA is the wrong choice when the app must track location in the background, as with field staff or delivery riders, or when it needs Bluetooth receipt printers or other hardware the browser cannot reach reliably. It is also a poor fit when large amounts of data must stay on the phone for days without a connection, because browsers can clear a web app's stored data when the device runs short of space. In those cases a native Android app is the honest recommendation, and we will tell you so before quoting.
Why it suits Indian distribution
Distribution here already runs on WhatsApp, and a PWA fits that habit: the rep sends a link, the retailer taps it, and the order lands in your system with no store download in between. Retailer phones are often entry-level Android handsets with little free storage, which is exactly where a small app helps. UPI payments work inside the app through Razorpay, including the flow that opens the customer's own UPI app directly. Hosting costs are those of a website, and there is no store fee unless you choose to list the app on Google Play.
How the build runs and what it costs
We design around the three or four tasks users perform most, build the offline behaviour early because it shapes everything else, and test on the entry-level phones your users actually carry. A PWA with logins, a back office, offline support and notifications falls in the ₹75,000 to ₹2,50,000 range of dynamic web applications and is usually live within 6 to 10 weeks. If a Play Store listing is wanted later, the same PWA can be wrapped as a Trusted Web Activity and published without a second codebase. VS Tech Builders builds both PWAs and native Android apps, so the recommendation follows your users rather than our preference.
Frequently asked questions
Can a PWA be listed on the Google Play Store?
Yes. A PWA can be packaged as a Trusted Web Activity and published on Google Play, where it installs and updates like any other app while still running your web code. That gives you a store listing, ratings and search visibility without maintaining a separate Android codebase. Apple's App Store has no equivalent route, so iPhone users install the app from the browser instead.
Do push notifications work on iPhones?
Yes, with one condition. Since iOS 16.4, iPhones support web push notifications for web apps that the user has added to the home screen; a site simply opened in the browser cannot send them. The app therefore needs to guide iPhone users through adding it to their home screen first, which we build into the first-run screens. On Android, notifications work from the browser or the installed app.
How much data can a PWA keep offline?
Enough for most business uses: a catalogue of a few thousand items, a customer list and several days of pending orders fit comfortably. Browsers set storage limits based on the device's free space and may clear data from rarely used apps when the phone runs short, so a PWA should treat its offline store as a working copy and sync often. Apps that need weeks of offline data should be native.
Is a PWA cheaper than a native app?
Usually, for the same features, because one codebase serves Android, iPhone and desktop and there is no store release process to manage. A focused native Android app in India typically costs ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000, while a PWA of similar scope sits in the ₹75,000 to ₹2,50,000 range of web applications. The saving disappears if you later need native features and have to build the app a second time.
Can our existing website become a PWA?
Often, yes. If the site is already fast and mobile-friendly, adding a web app manifest, a service worker for offline pages and an install prompt is a modest piece of work. Genuine offline functionality, such as building an order without a connection, takes more, because the data and the sync logic must be designed for it. We look at your current site and tell you which of the two you are facing.
