Firebase apps: a full backend without running your own servers

Login, database, server logic, push notifications and hosting from one Google platform, so a small business app can launch with low running costs and grow without a rebuild.

Firebase is Google's app platform that provides user login, a cloud database, server functions, push notifications and web hosting as managed services. We build Firebase-backed apps for small and growing businesses that want a dependable backend without renting or managing servers, and we explain plainly where its costs rise.

Starting from
₹65,000
Typical range
₹1,00,000 – ₹2,50,000 (focused) · ₹2,50,000 – ₹6,00,000 (payments, roles and admin)
Timeline
6–8 weeks (focused) · 10–16 weeks (full)

What we build

  • 01

    Phone and Google login

Firebase Authentication handles OTP and Google sign-in, with separate roles for customers, staff and the office.

  • 02

    Firestore database

Orders, customers and balances in Google's managed database, reflected on every connected phone within seconds.

  • 03

    Cloud Functions

Server-side logic such as order allotment, invoice numbering and payment checks runs on Google's servers, not on the phone.

  • 04

    Free push notifications

Delivery updates, reminders and offers sent through Firebase Cloud Messaging, which carries no per-message charge.

  • 05

    Hosted admin panel

Your office dashboard on Firebase Hosting, in the same project and behind the same logins.

  • 06

    Security rules

Rules on the database itself decide who can read or change each record, so customers only ever see their own orders.

  • 07

    Indian data region

The database created in Google's Mumbai region, decided at setup because the location cannot be moved later.

  • 08

    Budget alerts

Spending alerts on your Google Cloud billing account, so unusual usage reaches you as a message before the invoice.

Who this is for

A packaged drinking water supplier in Trichy is a fair example. A few hundred homes and offices order 20-litre cans, some daily, others whenever they run out. Orders arrive by phone and WhatsApp, delivery staff carry a printed list, nobody is sure how many empty cans each customer is holding, and office accounts are billed monthly from a notebook. The business needs an ordering app, a delivery app and a small office dashboard. It does not need a server room, a system administrator or a hosting bill sized for a large company. That combination is exactly where a Firebase backend fits.

What Firebase gives the app

Firebase is Google's platform of ready-made backend services. Instead of writing and hosting a server from scratch, the app is assembled from managed parts:

  • Authentication: phone OTP or Google sign-in, with separate roles for customers, delivery staff and the office.
  • Firestore: the database holding orders, customers, can balances and payments, which updates every connected phone within seconds when something changes.
  • Cloud Functions: the logic that must never live on a phone, such as allotting orders to delivery staff by area, numbering invoices and confirming a payment with the gateway before marking it paid.
  • Cloud Messaging: push notifications such as "your cans are on the way" or a monthly bill reminder.
  • Hosting: the office dashboard, served from the same project with the same logins.

We used the same Firebase foundation, with a Next.js storefront and Razorpay, for the Pirandai Kadai online store.

How it suits Indian conditions

Firestore keeps a copy of recently loaded data on the phone, so a delivery boy in a building basement can still mark a drop, and it syncs when he steps outside. UPI payments go through your gateway, and a Cloud Function verifies each one with the gateway before the order shows as paid, which stops screenshots being passed off as payments. Bills and can statements share to WhatsApp from the app. For Indian customers we create the database in Google's Mumbai region, and because that choice is permanent, it is made deliberately on day one.

Running costs: why small businesses like it

Google's free allowance covers many apps in their first months, and beyond it you pay for what you use: document reads and writes, storage and function runs. Push notifications are free. Cloud Functions need the pay-as-you-go plan, which simply means a billing account is attached. For an app with a few hundred active customers the monthly bill is usually modest, with no server to rent while the app is quiet.

The honest part: scale and data location

Firebase charges by activity rather than by server size, and that cuts both ways. A screen that reads ten thousand records every time it opens costs nothing in testing and real money once hundreds of users open it daily. We design reads carefully, keep running totals pre-calculated, and set budget alerts on your account. For report-heavy systems, such as multi-branch accounting with complex queries, a relational database like PostgreSQL is often the better fit; we compare the two in Firebase versus MySQL. Location matters too. If a client, auditor or tender asks where your data is stored, the answer is the region chosen at setup, and under India's DPDP Act you remain responsible for how customer data is handled wherever it sits.

How the build runs and what it costs

Discovery maps your orders, roles and payment flow, and then we design the data structure before any screen, because in Firestore the structure decides both speed and running cost. Weekly demos follow. A simple Firebase-backed app typically starts around ₹65,000. Most focused ones cost ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 and need 6 to 8 weeks; payments, several roles and a full admin dashboard push a project into the ₹2,50,000–₹6,00,000 band and a 10-to-16-week schedule. The Firebase project, the billing account and the Play Console account are all created in your name, and VS Tech Builders hands over the source code on final payment.

When not to use Firebase

Choose something else when your data is deeply relational and report-driven, when a regulator or large customer demands a specific hosting arrangement, or when you already run a working server and database that the app can connect to. And skip the app entirely if customers order once a month; a WhatsApp catalogue may be all you need.

Real project

Pirandai Kadai

A complete e-commerce platform with geo-routed payments, multi-image product variants, and a Firebase-backed admin — built from scratch in three months.

Frequently asked questions

How much will Firebase cost us each month?

For a small business app with a few hundred regular users, the bill is usually modest and sometimes stays within Google's free allowance. It grows with activity: reads, writes, storage and function runs. We estimate it from your expected order volume during discovery, design screens to avoid wasteful reads, and set a budget alert so any sudden jump reaches you immediately.

Is our business data safe on Firebase?

Firebase runs on Google Cloud, with data encrypted in transit and at rest. The weak point is rarely Google; it is usually the app's security rules, which decide who may read or change each record. We write and test those rules for every role, so a customer only ever sees their own orders and a delivery person only the drops assigned to them.

Can we move off Firebase later if we outgrow it?

Yes, though it is real work. Firestore data can be exported, and because you own both the code and the Google account, nothing blocks a move. What needs rewriting is the part of the app that talks to the database. If you expect heavy reporting or your own servers within a couple of years, say so early, and we may recommend a different backend from the start.

Does a Firebase app work without internet?

Partly, out of the box. Firestore keeps a local copy of data the app has already loaded and queues changes made offline, syncing them when the signal returns. That covers short drops in lifts, basements and between towers. For apps that must run offline for hours or days, such as village field work, we add a full on-phone database and a planned sync.
